A Unique Partnership of University of Minnesota Physicians Transplant Program and Fairview Health Services

|
Innovation, Caring and Outstanding Success Rates
The University of Minnesota transplant program's commitment to helping
people live longer, healthier lives began in 1963, when its first kidney
transplant was performed. The University’s transplant program quickly became known
as the place willing and able to take on difficult, complex cases — including
high-risk, extremely young and older recipients. During the past 35 years,
the transplant programs have expanded to include all abdominal organs.
By 2003, more than 6,000 kidney transplants and 9,600 total transplants
have been performed by University of Minnesota physicians, with excellent
success rates in each program.

Transplant services began in 1963 at the University
of Minnesota with the successful transplant of a living donor kidney.
The partnership of the Academic Health Center at the University of
Minnesota, University of Minnesota Physicians and Fairview Health
Services has, since 1997, continued to provide innovative approaches
to transplant care.
Transplant patients face times of challenge
and hope. They want to be confident they will receive the very best
care available, and that they will be treated with dignity, compassion
and respect for their individual needs and concerns.
The Transplant Center staff and physicians take special care to
help our patients become as healthy as possible before their surgeryand
to make sure they are doing everything they can to stay healthy
afterwards. Our transplant coordinators teach self-care to patients
and their families, assess and record each patients progress,
and maintain lifelong relationships to help patients continually
improve their health.
